“The Song of Crown" Summary

This is also the story of the Hilneys. In the South of Carmai, the village they live, there is an extremely high mountain. People have heard that one can get a crown if he prepares the best ball he thinks and rolls it to the top of the mountain. Every Hilney is eager to try when he knows it.
Robert thinks that he is very strong so he makes a huge ball. To show his own capability, he also deliberately puts thorns on it. But with strong sense of self-esteem, Robert is afraid others will discover his failure so he decides to start at night. However, it is too dark too see. His hands have been frequently stabbed by the thorns. At last, he is forced to give up to return home for curing his hands.
Later on, Jonathan and Irene also make the best balls they consider and roll to the top. Karl envies that they both get crowns. He tries to make two balls but without success. After a dream, he realizes that he should make his own ball, instead of copying others’ balls that get succeed. Karl finally makes a ball to match his own size. He makes a lot of efforts and gains a crown successfully.
Robert knows that Karl who is short has even succeed. He decides to try again. After having rolled three times, Robert is no longer stubborn on a big ball, no thorns no tricks, either. He makes a ball, a half size of the first one and decides not to start at night. He rolls the ball at the day time. Unexpectedly, Robert wears a crown back before the sunset. Everyone in the village is glad for him.
Then, the village head holds a party to celebrate together. Those who get crowns put them on and sing a song, “The Song of Crown”, on stage together.
After the party, every Hilney decides not to wear the crown on his head, but puts it at home to encourage himself. Because they know everyone has his own way to go, getting the crown is just the beginning.
